Inspiration

Designing with Devotion

A serene paradise in a nature-infused landscape

When the queen of the palace yearned for her royal home after her marriage, the king decided to construct a palace reminiscent of her familiar surroundings to provide her with a comforting sense of being home. This became our primary inspiration when we undertook the project of building a Royal villa dedicated to offering pristine Ayurvedic treatments and healing sessions.

We were deeply motivated to bring the essence of a Kerala-style palace to establish an authentic atmosphere. Kovilakam, a 129-year-old wooden palace, has been relocated and diligently restored after being dismantled from its original location in Kerala. Our intention was to capture the true essence of Kerala’s heritage, as Ayurveda and Kerala share a profound connection. We wanted to establish this connection through our design. Our goal was for visitors at Kovilakam to enjoy a luxurious royal experience infused with lush greenery and a stunning landscape to truly enhance their rejuvenation experience.

Harmony, Sustainability, Honesty

Fusion of Classic Palace Elegance with the serene ambiance of nature

In a daring display of architectural finesse, we embarked on a captivating journey by dismantling a timeless traditional Kerala Royal Palace from its ancestral roots. With meticulous precision and the aid of seasoned professionals, we orchestrated an expert reinstallation of the traditional Royal House and built a therapy room, a bedroom, a living space, a meditation room, and a plunge pool.

The palace retains its original elements with only damaged parts being replaced. Each facet of Sri Kovilakam, from the exquisite artistic woodwork of the Poomach, a traditional astronomical ceiling adorned with stars centered by the sun to the Nila Vara (wooden walls, floors, and ceilings) to the Ellam Thinna (a sit-out verandah) and the Poomuttam with Tulasi Thara, has been meticulously preserved and seamlessly transformed into a modern facility. The Ara, a space traditionally dedicated to auspicious activities like puja, has been converted into a meditation room making the palace an ancient allure with all modern amenities.

The palace’s wooden structure naturally provides a cool ambiance, thanks to the ample air caps, passages, and gaps between the ceiling and the roof facilitating continuous air circulation. We sourced all the essential elements including murals and artwork on the entrance gate exclusively from Kerala and used locally quarried laterite stone from Kerala to build the compound walls. We engaged skilled craftsmen and artisans from Kerala to ensure that every interior decoration perfectly aligns with the rich aesthetic heritage of Kerala.

Sumeru follows a holistic approach to designing and constructing buildings that not only consider the functional needs of the space, but also prioritize the well-being of its occupants and the environment. The construction process emphasizes the use of locally found materials and sustainable practices to ensure that the building is resilient, long-lasting and conserves energy usage.

Furthermore, the design incorporates eco-friendly practices that respect and work with the five elements of nature, including earth, water, fire, air, and space to evoke sattvic vibes. We also draw inspiration from ancient architecture practices, using research and innovation to incorporate them into modern times. Honesty and integrity are key values upheld throughout the construction process, ensuring that the final product is not only beautiful but also ethical and sustainable.

Sumeru engineers believed that ‘Beauty’ is reckoned and appreciated by everyone, and they made it come true in Kovilakam’s construction. In every nook and corner, they’ve woven a royal touch, adorned with Kerala’s art and intricate designs. We greatly admire their skill in balancing the five elements of nature, resulting in a high-quality ambiance with gentle breezes, fresh air, and warm light that create a calming and soothing atmosphere all around us.

Sumeru did an out-of-the-box construction with Kovilakam by moving a real ancient Royal Keralian-style Palace to create a place for residents to enjoy Ayurvedic treatments. They reassembled the Palace in Bangalore, adding local Keralian art, artisans, and materials to complete the structure. They handled the project with care, transparency, and cost-effectiveness.
